I wrote this book as a companion volume to Lost Japan, based on thirty years of experience in Thailand. In particular, I wanted to describe my experience with traditional Thai arts – a field which is rarely, if ever, covered in writings about Bangkok, which is celebrated mostly for its shopping and nightlife. Yet these arts are among the most sophisticated of all East Asia, with much to teach the world.
I wrote Bangkok Found to be the book people would read after they’ve seen the colorful modern city – and then start to wonder where the mysterious appeal of Bangkok really lies.
Written in the same vein as Lost Japan, it’s a mix of the essential and the quirky, the factual and the mythical, as old culture meets global fusion in the crossroads that is Bangkok.
